Hi, I’m Katey! I’m an instructional designer with a passion for creating training experiences that are not just educational but genuinely enjoyable. My goal is to make learning something people look forward to, helping them retain valuable information along the way.
I hold a bachelor’s degree in Digital Entertainment Technology, where I explored video editing, animation, and game development. I found myself drawn to the art, design, and visual side, though I also gained a solid foundation in programming. My journey into instructional design began in college as a TA, where I had the chance to revamp course structures for the DET program. This early experience sparked my love for instructional design, leading me to pursue a master’s degree in Instructional Design and Technology, which I completed in June 2024. Since then, I’ve enjoyed collaborating with design teams to create resources that are both practical and engaging.
In all my work, I aim to balance creativity with efficiency, like designing a comic book-style job aid that transformed routine coaching into an engaging, relatable resource. One project I’m especially proud of is my Hooked On Crochet training program, a personal project that evolved from a simple Google Classroom course during my master’s program to a fully interactive, video-based experience complete with character voiceovers and enhanced visuals.
Beyond instructional design, I’m a natural problem-solver who enjoys process improvements. One highlight was creating a QuickBase dashboard to streamline call center scheduling, saving hundreds of hours previously spent on email coordination and manual processes, resulting in over $100,000 in process improvement savings. This dashboard has since become a centralized resource used across the organization.
Personally, I’m based in Austin, Texas, with one dog and two cats—all of whom are featured characters in my crochet training program! In my spare time, I love crocheting and sharing my creations on Instagram at @creationsbykateycakes.
